Can I Take Leave Without Pay (Extraordinary Leave)?

Central Government civil employees under the CCS (Leave) Rules, 1972Checked against official documents on 4 Oct 2026

Short answerYes. Extraordinary leave (EOL) can be granted in special circumstances when no other leave is admissible, or when other leave is admissible but you apply in writing for EOL. You get no leave salary. Temporary employees face limits of 3 to 24 months per occasion, and no leave of any kind can run continuously beyond five years.
