Who Gets Vacation in KVS
- All categories of teachers, librarians, and laboratory assistants, attendants and Group D staff are vacation staff. The Principal and office staff are non-vacation staff. The Vice-Principal post is treated as both (KVS Education Code, Article 66, p. 43).
- Vacation staff not called for duty during the long (summer or winter) vacation get vacation pay only if they actually worked for at least five months in the preceding academic year (KVS Education Code, Article 67, p. 43).
- Contractual and part-time teachers are not entitled to vacation pay (KVS Education Code, Article 67(2), p. 44).
Earned Leave When You Work in Vacation
- Under the CCS (Leave) Rules, vacation staff get 5 days of earned leave on 1 January and 1 July, plus extra leave if they lose part of the vacation, up to 30 days in a calendar year (CCS (Leave) Rules 1972, Rule 28(1), p. 21).
- KVS applies this as follows: if you have at least one year of service in KVS, you get earned leave equal to 2/5 of the days you were on duty during vacations or breaks, for training, in-service courses or other duties you were specifically called for, provided the duty is not less than 10 days (KVS Memorandum dated 31.08.2022, para 1, p. 1).
- Earned leave for vacation duty is capped at 30 days in a calendar year, including the 10 days you earn regularly (KVS Memorandum dated 31.08.2022, para 2, p. 1).
- Journey time to attend the duty counts as duty (KVS Memorandum dated 31.08.2022, para 3, p. 1).
- This applies from 14.12.2018, and old cases may be reviewed (KVS Memorandum dated 31.08.2022, para 4, p. 1).
- Example: if you attend a 15-day training during summer vacation, you earn 2/5 x 15 = 6 days of earned leave.
Duty of Less Than 10 Days: Compensatory Leave
- If the duty in vacation is less than 10 days, compensatory leave can be given instead (KVS Memorandum dated 31.08.2022, para 1, p. 1).
- For extra classes, half a day's compensatory leave is given for 2 to 4 hours, and a full day for more than 4 hours (KVS Office Order on Compensatory Leave, January 2019, para (i), p. 1).
- For escort duty or training on holidays, vacation or breaks, compensatory leave may be given whether or not you draw TA/DA (KVS Office Order on Compensatory Leave, January 2019, para (ii), p. 1).
- Compensatory leave should normally be taken within one month of becoming due. Unused compensatory leave is not encashed at superannuation, resignation or death (KVS Office Order on Compensatory Leave, January 2019, para (iii), p. 1).
Where to Check
Check the KVS OM on vacation and breaks for the current session (KVS OM dated 19.01.2026, Vacation and Breaks 2026-27, p. 1), the KVS memorandum dated 31.08.2022 (KVS Memorandum dated 31.08.2022, para 1, p. 1) and Rule 28 of the CCS (Leave) Rules (CCS (Leave) Rules 1972, Rule 28, p. 21). NVS issues its own vacation schedule and orders.
